Beach days on a budget — taking the Red Bus to Hawksbay and Sea View

Public transit isn't just for commuting to work. Karachi's beaches — Sea View and Hawksbay — are both reachable by RedBus, and the trip costs a fraction of what you'd spend on ride-hailing or driving. Here's how to plan a beach day on the cheap.

Sea View

Sea View is the easier of the two beaches to reach. The promenade runs along the southern coast, with multiple entry points and a long stretch of restaurants, food stalls, and parking.

R10 (Numaish Chowrangi to Ibrahim Hyderi) is the most direct Red Bus route to Sea View. It passes through Numaish, Mobile Market, Metropole, Frere Hall, 3 Talwar, Dolmen Mall Clifton, Seaview Clock Tower, Khayaban-e-Ittehad, DHA Phase 7, DHA Phase 6, DHA Phase 2, and KPT Interchange, before continuing to Ibrahim Hyderi. The Sea View Clock Tower stop is right at the promenade.
EV1 (Malir Cantt to Dolmen Mall Clifton) is the air-conditioned electric option, dropping you at Dolmen Mall, which is a short walk from both the Sea View Clock Tower and the Boat Basin chowk. The EV buses are quieter and fully air-conditioned, so the trip itself is half the fun.

For a weekend beach day, type "Sea View" or "Dolmen Mall Clifton" into the RedBus Karachi app — it will return the current best route from your location.

Hawksbay

Hawksbay is the longer, more remote beach — the kind you go to for a quieter afternoon. The trade-off is that the route is more limited:

R13 (Tower to Hawksbay) is the most direct option. This is a popular Red Bus route that takes passengers from Tower directly to Hawksbay for the standard Rs. 80 or Rs. 120 fare (depending on the trip distance).
The trip takes about 45–60 minutes from the city centre, depending on traffic. Bring water.

Hawksbay is also reachable from the suburban side via the EV network, but the most common option for central Karachi residents is R13 from Tower. The app will pick this up automatically when you type "Hawksbay" into the destination.

What to pack for a bus beach day

Taking the bus to the beach requires a bit more planning than driving, but the savings are significant. Here's what to bring and what to leave at home:

Bring:

A small daypack rather than a large beach bag. The bus is more comfortable with a compact pack, and you'll have your hands free to hold on.
Water bottles. At least one per person, plus a refillable bottle if you have one. The beach gets hot, and the bus isn't always cold enough to fully rehydrate you.
Cash in small notes for entry fees, snacks, and the return fare. Many beach stalls don't accept cards.
A light layer for the return trip, especially in winter. Sea breeze on the way back can be colder than you'd expect.
Sunscreen, hat, sunglasses. The Karachi sun is unforgiving.

Skip:

Large coolers. They take up space and the bus will be crowded. Buy ice at the beach if you need it.
Beach umbrellas. Too bulky for a bus trip. Most beaches have shaded areas or you can buy a small umbrella at a stall.
Valuables. Leave jewellery, expensive watches, and excess electronics at home. The beach and the bus are both pickpocket-prone.

The cost of a beach day, by mode

For a family of four spending a Saturday at Sea View:

By ride-hailing (round trip): Rs. 1,600–2,400. Just the transport.
By personal car: Rs. 800–1,200 in fuel plus Rs. 200–400 in parking. Plus the headache of finding a spot on a busy weekend.
By RedBus: Rs. 320–480 total for all four fares. The bus drops you at the promenade, you spend the day, and the return bus brings you back.

The savings are large enough to pay for a full meal at the beach.

A quick safety note

The beach is fun but it's a public space. Watch your belongings, especially in crowded areas, and don't swim beyond the marked safe zones. The bus trip home is usually the most tiring part of the day — plan to leave the beach an hour before sunset to catch the return bus comfortably.
